Our Story

Castro Valley Girls Wrestling is committed to empowering young women through disciplined training, competitive excellence, and character development. Our mission is to build confident, resilient athletes who demonstrate integrity, leadership, and respect—on and off the mat.

Girls’ Wrestling: The Fastest‑Growing Sport in America

Girls’ wrestling has transformed from a niche activity into the fastest‑growing high school sport in the United States, with participation reaching 74,064 athletes nationwide in the 2024–25 school year—a 15% year‑over‑year increase . This explosive growth reflects a cultural shift: more girls are stepping onto the mat, more schools are offering girls‑only teams, and nearly every state now hosts sanctioned girls’ championships.

California’s Leadership

California is one of the strongest hubs for girls’ wrestling in the nation.

  • 833 schools now support girls’ wrestling programs.

  • Roughly 9,000 female athletes compete statewide.

  • The California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) launched its women’s wrestling division in 2023, marking a major milestone for post‑secondary opportunities. Participation jumped 40% in just one year, reaching 100 athletes in 2024 .

California’s rapid expansion mirrors the national trend: girls are not just joining teams—they’re building a movement.

Success on the World Stage: U.S. Women in the Olympics

The rise of girls’ wrestling is directly connected to the success of American women at the Olympic level.

Historic Olympic Achievements

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Team USA women delivered a record‑setting performance:

  • Two Olympic gold medals (Sarah Hildebrandt at 50 kg, Amit Elor at 68 kg)

  • One silver (Kennedy Blades at 76 kg)

  • One bronze (Helen Maroulis at 57 kg)

This marked the first time the U.S. women earned multiple gold medals in a single Olympics and tied the all‑time record of four total medals .

Amit Elor: California’s Own

Amit Elor, from Walnut Creek, California, became the youngest American wrestler ever to win Olympic gold—male or female—at just 20 years old . Her dominance (31–2 match score at the Games) symbolizes the new era of American women’s wrestling.

Helen Maroulis: A Pioneer

Helen Maroulis continues to break barriers as the first American woman to win three Olympic wrestling medals, inspiring generations of girls worldwide .

These achievements are not isolated—they are the result of decades of perseverance, expanding opportunities, and the growing pipeline of girls entering the sport.
